Taapsee Pannu to play Irom Sharmila in Imphal

The political unrest in the seven sisters of North East India had prompted one woman to go on a hunger rest for over 16 years. Irom Sharmila became a known name after she continued world's largest hunger strike and fought for the benefit of her state. Now, her life will be depicted on celluloid and if all goes well, Taapsee Pannu will play the protagonist.

Taapsee Pannu has been approached to play the role of Irom Sharmila, the social activist in the film tentatively titled Imphal. While the film is said to have a debutant director, it will be presented by Hansal Mehta, who is currently working on Kangna Ranaut starrer Simran. From what we hear, the director-producer has been closely following the life of Irom Sharmila and even the script is in place. However, since Hansal is busy with his other work commitments, the other details of this biopic on India's Iron Lady are yet to be finalized.

Prior to this, Hansal Mehta has directed some bold and controversial biopics like Shahid (based on Human Rights lawyer Shahid Azmi), Aligarh (based on the infamous homosexual scandal of a professor) among others and has even won awards at film festivals for the same.
